STEM Electives Course Proposals for 2019-2020


Casa Grande Middle School, Casa Grande, AZ  

STEM 6A / 6B

This course will be a beginning survey of engineering, design and the scientific processes used to problem solve. Below are some of the things we will be working on throughout the year. This course is designed to encourage exploration and education on the tools available to students to work through the problem solving / design process required.

  • Measurement Labs/ Graphing
  • Basic Bottle Biology
  • Paper Airplane/ Stomp Rocket Challenge

STEM 7A / 7B

This course will be a continueing survey of engineering, design and the scientific processes used to problem solve. Students are encouraged to have previous STEM experience, so they will be able to work more independently. Below are some of the things we will be working on throughout the year. This course is designed to encourage exploration and continue to educate students on the tools available to students to work through the problem solving / design process required.

STEM 8A / 8B

This course will be a advanced survey of engineering, design and the scientific processes used to problem solve. Below are some of the things we will be working on throughout the year. This course is designed to support and inspire exploration and application of scientific content, including the tools available to students to work through the problem solving / design process required.

  • Bouyancy Labs
  • Hydroponics/ Bottle Biology/ Polinators

Communications/ Media Sciences

This course is designed to help students explore the world of Media and Publication.  Students will participate in ALL aspects of producing a School Newspaper and the WILDChat News Channel. This course is open to 7th and 8th grade students only and is heavy on ability to write, edit, and publish journalistic style media.  This course is NOT about Social Media Usage. Students will learn all aspects involved in publishing both of these media.

Students will be expected to:

  • Have excellent writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrate responsible online usage
  • Experienced with Google Docs, Slides and Sheets
  • Experience in creating movies and using music programs.
  • Have a willingness to learn, create and listen to others ideas
  • Experience taking photographs and/or editing images

Science Olympiad GREEN TEAM (7th Grade)

Science Olympiad is a National Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math program that allows students to apply what they know in a competitive setting. Science Olympiad offers experiences and hands on learning in all areas of the sciences, such as Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Engineering. Students work in partnerships with another student to develop their knowledge in selected events and builds. These events are then tested at multiple Invitationals throughout the state of Arizona, culminating with Regionals and State Competitions. Students learn advanced concepts in all science disciplines and how to collaborate, perfect and compete. This course is a year long class at CGMS and must have teacher approval to enroll.

Students should have the following skills or abilities:

  • Knowledge of Engineering and Design practices
  • Science Equipment and lab safety

Science Olympiad GOLD TEAM (8th Grade)
